Over this past weekend I had the privilege of watching some young adults demonstrate compassion for others.  I watched as they helped guide a person and ensure that the individual felt a part of what they were doing.  They demonstrated patience and understanding.  They provided support and encouragement.  They mentored the individual so that the person had confidence.  This was truly a role model for other youth and many adults.

Compassion is one item which the world seems to be lacking in serious ways. There appears to me to be a great abundance of violence and hatred in the world.  This is definitely not a new situation.  Humans seem to have always leaned more toward the violent side than the compassionate side.  Some would argue that this was evident in one of the earliest accounts of humans known as the Cain and Abel story.

As a person of faith, I find that Jesus definitely showed great compassion.  Jesus even reminded all humans of the great need for compassion when he said:

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

(Matthew 25:34-40, NIV)

May we all learn from others who demonstrate compassion.  I was reminded of it through the actions of some young adults.
