Holding On to Hope   Leave a comment

There are times in life when the challenges can appear overwhelming.  The list of concerns becomes longer.  The uncertainty seems to be more than those things which are certain.  During these times, a person can easily become bogged down and weary.  Each day becomes a struggle.  Focus and determination can appear elusive. It is during such times that reminding one’s self that there is hope becomes vital.  Having individual(s) who will support and restore hope is critical.

I consider myself extremely fortunate.  I have a strong faith in my Lord.  I have people in my life who provide me more support and hope than many.  I must wonder what it would be like if I did not have these two elements in my life.  Each day I read in the newspaper or see on television situations that are truly devastating.  When I am made of aware of these situations, I quickly wonder how the people impacted by them are able to move forward.  Do they have a faith in a Lord who is far greater than any situation on earth?  Do they have a strong support system of friends and family?  I confess that I truly cannot see how anyone can go through difficulties without those two elements.

So I want to remind all of you, hold on to the hope that you have.  Each day is a new beginning with new possibilities.  Make sure that you invite people into your life that can restore your hope when events tear it down.  Have some type of faith which will help you to remember that there is someone greater than anything in this world.  Hold on to hope!

The Master’s Hand   Leave a comment

Sometimes we all can feel that we have little value to this world.  Sometimes people can make us feel as if we are too damaged to be of worth.  The song which I share with you today is one that has reminded me that those feelings are not true.  I was introduced to this song by two wonderful female musicians at church camp many years ago.  I return to it often.  As a believer, I know that the Master does amazing things.  In the Master’s hand, we have great value.  So I share this with all of you.  Hopefully, it will be able to strengthen you on difficult days and also remind you as you look at others, the Master can make the change for all people so be careful of what worth you place on someone.

Always Have A Dream   Leave a comment

Yesterday I had a conversation with a friend.  We had not seen each other for quite a while so he was updating me on the activities in his life.  During our conversation, he asked me if I thought there ever came a time when a person needed to stop dreaming.  He was not referring to what occurs while we sleep but future hopes and aspirations.  I indicated that I did not think there was ever a time to quit dreaming.

Dreams are a rather complex aspect of our lives.  When we take inventory of our life, we can identify dreams that we had when we were younger which never materialized.  Because of the perceived times of failure, we can often adopt an attitude which states dreams are a waste of time.  However, I would have to disagree with that attitude.  I think that even if a dream does not materialize as we had hoped, the dream has driven us to move forward toward the fulfillment of the dream.  If we had not dreamed, we may never have taken the steps which we did that allowed us to be where we are now.

Dreams are based on the belief that there is always something more for us to do in life.  Dreams allow us to believe that we can continue to evolve into the person we aspire to be.  Dreams motivate us to take risk and to reach higher.  Without dreams, we just navigate through life going through motions but having little to no drive.

So my friend and I came to the conclusion that a person should always have a dream.  What is your dream today?

Signs of Hope   Leave a comment

maplebuddingThis time of year always has little treasurers which I find in creation.  Today I was looking at the tree outside my office window.  The tree is starting to have huge buds on its branches.  Seeing these buds always makes me smile because I know that they are a sign that the bare branches soon will be filled with green leaves.  Since I always prefer to see green leaves on the branches instead of bare branches, this makes me happy.  For me, the buds are signs of hope.  A hope that is founded in the reality of spring.

Considering this during some quiet time this morning, I began to ponder what signs of hope are present for me.  Since this weekend is Easter, I have an obvious sign of hope rooted in my belief in the resurrection.  On rainy days when a rainbow appears, I have another sign of hope.  When I witness young people acting in respectful and helpful ways, I see another sign of hope.

What are the signs of hope which you experience?  Do you take the time to truly take notice of signs of hope?  They really are all around us but we tend to focus on the negativity in life and not spend time recognizing the signs of hope.  So my challenge for myself and for those who read my blog is to spend one week naming the signs of hope that you experience throughout each day.  This just might have a very lasting impact on all of us.

Bring Him Home   Leave a comment

This week I am starting a new tradition on my blog.  I am posting a song on Fridays which speaks to me each week.

In light of the violence that we are experiencing in places within our nation and the Middle East, as well as the Ukraine, I have decided to share a song that I believe many parents can relate to in regards to their children.  It is a prayer that takes place in the midst of the musical, Les Miserable.

Fighting Through the Blahs   Leave a comment

Today, as the weather switches once again and we get rain, freezing rain, and then snow, there is a song that comes to my mind:

It is very easy to get a bit down on days like this especially toward the end of winter when all we crave is warm temperatures, sunshine, and green.  However, we know that these days are not permanent.  We also know that there will be days of warm temperatures, sunshine, and green.  So that leads me to another song:

So hang in there and know tomorrow will be another day of possibilities.

The Rainbow   Leave a comment

I have a picture that hangs on one of the walls of my office.  I look at it frequently because it is on the wall opposite my desk.  Sometimes I do not even notice it.  Today was not one of those days.  Today I looked up and saw the picture hanging on the wall.  Today I was drawn to a detail in the picture.

I chose the picture because I have a great love for bald eagles.  In fact, I have quiet a collection of pictures and statues of bald eagles.  This particular picture includes two bald eagles in flight along a shoreline with a lighthouse, clouds, the waves, the rocks, and a rainbow.  It was the rainbow that caught my eye this morning.  I believe I was drawn to it because in my faith, a rainbow is a sign of hope.  I would say it is even a sign of the promise of tomorrow.

Sometimes in life, we have days when there have been highs and lows.  I find that if I go to sleep after an event or series of events that I would classify as low, I wake up in the morning and have a bit of a struggle.  This morning was one of those mornings.  But when I sat down at my desk and looked at the rainbow in the picture, I sensed that I was being given a message.  For me this message was a reminder of the hope that continues to exist.  The message was one of assurance that there is tomorrow and in tomorrow is a brighter day.  This movement toward tomorrow can lift my mood today because I find hope in the promise.

As a Christian, I believe in the hope of something greater than I can imagine.  I believe that this hope is rooted in the promise of my Lord.  The story of the rainbow in Scripture speaks of God’s promise to never destroy creation.  It is a promise of many tomorrows.  In the story of what Jesus has done, there is an even greater promise of tomorrows because Jesus destroyed death that ends the tomorrows.  True, the tomorrows will be somewhere other than where we are today but the tomorrows will continue for us.

So today, the rainbow reminds me of tomorrow and the promise contained in tomorrow.  Like the bright and beautiful colors of the rainbow, I will see the bright and beautiful colors of tomorrow even if there is a little grey in today
